Nutritional Support

In this video, Paul Reilly spends about 27 minutes speaking on "Nutritional Support" at the 30th Annual Cancer Convention held on Labor Day weekend by the Cancer Control Society.

About Paul Reilly

PAUL REILLY, N.D., L.Ac graduated as a Naturopathic Physician from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington in 1985. He is licensed to practice in Washington, Alaska, and Oregon. He completed a Masters in Acupuncture in 1995 and holds both national accreditation and state licensure as a Licensed Acupuncturist.

Currently, he is a Staff Physician at Seattle Cancer Treatment & Wellness Center in Seattle, Washington. This was the first Oncology Center in the nation to fully integrate the services of Conventional Oncologists and Naturopathic Physicians in order to provide a comprehensive, integrated approach to cancer care.

In addition to Clinical Practice, Dr. Reilly has been a part-time Faculty Member at Bastyr University, a former Board Member for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and former Editor of the State Association WANP Bulletin. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and serves as Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the AANP.

Dr. Reilly has been a frequent contributor to the media, including The Textbook of Natural Medicine, Journal of Naturopathic Medicine, Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, Health Store News and numerous other publications. He serves on the Editorial Board of Natural Medicine Online. He has also served as a Consultant for the Sheridan Research Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving treatment for cancer patients.

In his Clinical Practice with cancer patients Dr. Reilly was frustrated by the lack of books and information explaining the use of integrated Oncology Care that he could recommend to patients. Other doctors were also calling with questions about why particular medications were being recommended. It became obvious that the best way to dissesminate the information was to write a book covering these topics in depth. When Dr. Michael Murray called with the same idea, it was just the impetus needed to actually get the project from planning and into production. Dr. Reilly and Dr. Murray collaborated with 2 other Naturopathic Physicians to write How to Prevent and Treat Cancer With Natural Medicines, due out in September of 2002.

It is Dr. Reilly’s hope that all his patients will be able to use the book to further improve their health and that all those who he cannot see personally will also benefit from what he has learned in working with cancer patients and survivors.

Well, what I would like to talk to you today is addressing the fact that current cancer care, as it's done in this country, is failing at least 50 percent of the people who go there.

And we would all hope that we can cure patients with using nothing but the natural therapies. But the reality is more than half of the people who have cancer do use some kind of conventional therapy. It's probably more like 80 percent in this country at some time during the process of being treated if they are going to use those therapy.

Well, we want to do is help them get the most good out of those therapies and minimize the side effects that occur with therapies. The way I think about this is like a pyramid. And the most important things are on the bottom. It's the healthy diet, adequate sleep, psycho neuroimmunology, what you're thinking, what you're doing, how you're living, what you're drinking. Unfortunately, with a half hour, I'm not going to be able to talk about that. Well, we're going to focus on.

Work were not very well.

Is the third level, which is code treatment for conventional therapies. Maybe next year we can cover one of the other levels. The goals of supplementation are, number one, reduce the side effects of whatever treatment they're going through. Number two, improve the tumor, kill. If patients are going to go through one of these treatments, you want to make sure they get the maximum benefit from it. Number three, support what's called a Patos is a Patos. This is programed cell death. This asked to work in order for any therapy, natural or conventional, to work. And number four, help support their immune system to reduce some of the side effects that occurred during the treatment. These others are important no matter what a patient is doing, inhibit metastasis or spread of the cancer, inhibiting angiogenesis or the growth of blood vessels, support their normal cell to cell communication and cell signaling. I think if we get better with these last four conventional therapies going to be obsolete and we're well on our way to seeing that, but it's gonna be a few more years. The first item I'd like to talk about is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone.

It's mostly known as its ability to regulate sleep and biorhythms. It's secreted in darkness and broken down by light. Melatonin has been shown in and of itself to reduce the growth of cancer cells. For example, women who are blind can't perceive light, so they have higher levels of melatonin. They have one half the rate of breast cancer of
